Our first home game of the season brought the visit of a young Histon reserve side to the Unwin ground.
With the pre-match team talk, we were informed that squad rotation will be used this season due to the size and quality of this years squad. The gaffers made a couple of changes for this game and the lads who game in showed why they should be starting and proved there worth.
The game started at a frantic pace with both sides trying to get on the score sheet in the early stages. After a couple of early chances the Robins did make the break through. It came from a Lawrence long throw, flicked on by Warren and finished poacher like by Bruiser 1-0 Ely.
It didn't take long though for Histon to get back on level terms. We failed to clear the ball properly and to be fair to the Histon lad he smashed the ball on the half-volley,from the edge of the box into the far corner with Pacey no chance. 1-1.
About 10 minutes later we again got on top, this time it was a goal mouth scramble which was finally finished by Warren. 2-1 Ely.
Almost straight from the re-start we let our guard down once more and let the visitors back in the game very cheaply! We once again tried to play ourselves out of danger and we got punished for our sloppy play. The ball got hit from 20 yards and beat Pacey at his near post. Half-time 2-2.
After a bit of a half-time rollicking from the managers we started on the front foot and it wasnt long before we got ourselves in front for the 3rd time. Once again it came via another goal mouth scramble, this time finished by Petitt. Ely 3-2
Just another few minutes passed before we doubled our advantage for the first time in the match. This time it came from the penalty spot, again finished by the impressive Pettit to claim his 3rd goal of the season. Ely 4-2.
We finished off the match by continuing to play some quality football and passed the ball about nicely. All in all a decent performance to gain 3 points for the Robins and to maintain our 100% start to the season. |
